Can facilities management ever be truly innovative?

This article also appeared in this month’s issue of the FMJ (Facilities Management Journal)

“The successful bidder will need to prove their track record of innovation..”, “innovation must be at the forefront of your proposal”, “we seek innovative ideas for  latest bog standard tender document…)” sounds familiar?  As an industry an outside observer may conclude that innovation is similar to the holy grail, often talked about but never found.  So is innovation the key to unlocking the potential of FM or are sound principles of doing the basics right, consistently, and in a safe manner the elusive secret to good FM?  Few words in FM can rival innovation for its prominence, universal use, and I would guess cause of meaningless paragraphs in so many tenders that only truly seek the status quo.  With all this being evident, is it possible for an FM service to be truly innovative?
